img_5580In most high schools, the duties of a student council are simple- organizing dances and pep rallies, or maybe even selling class t-shirts if they’re feeling ambitious.  At Enloe, however, this is just the tip of the iceberg.  I implore you to find one instance of a collection of high school students showing this level of unfailing commitment and love for their school and community year after year.  From the inception of Charity Ball- a small dance that initially raised only a few thousand dollars- the goal was to give back.  Over the years, we as a council have tweaked the way that we do this, all the while continuing to smash our ever-ambitious goals.

I cannot express in words the feeling of seeing the faces of Jill Staton Bullard (the CEO of Interfaith Food Shuttle) or Nell Barnes (the Executive Director of Learning Together) when they were given the big check on the steps at Marbles Kids Museum.  Helping 26,412 people to receive food as well as nutrition education with the money that we raised for Interfaith Food Shuttle, or giving the beautiful children at Learning Together new equipment and scholarships creates an emotional response that only Charity Ball can provide.  Knowing that WE did this, 60-odd high school children, is truly inspiring.  Every bit of passion, effort, and love for our community that is put into Charity Ball is returned to us in the deepest sense of fulfillment.

I know that this year will be no exception to our record of excellence and success with Charity Ball.  We are going to continue to surpass the expectations of our peers, our parents, our teachers, and our community, as we always have.  Urban Ministries is a terrific organization, helping those in need in the Triangle Area with food, shelter, and healthcare- a combination of services that no other local charity can provide, and certainly not on the scale that Urban Ministries does.  Whether you’re a student, parent, teacher, or a community member, you have a part to play in Charity Ball.  Donate, volunteer, or at the very least spread the word, because Enloe Charity Ball demands all hands on deck.
