img_2434On December 10th,2016 the students of Enloe and various members of the community will gather in Marbles Kids Museum for Enloe’s 12th annual Charity Ball. During the final days leading up to Charity Ball, people will be excited for the dancing and the desserts. Girls will be obsessing over what dress they will wear. To some people, this will just be another night that they can have fun with their friends, eat some food, and get blisters on their feet from their shoes. However, to the 65 members of Enloe Student Council, the Enloe student body, and Urban Ministries, this night will mean so much more.

When planning for Charity Ball, one of the first things we do is set a monetary goal.  We aim to raise that sum of money and donate it to the charity we are honoring. From the beginning of September to December 10th at 6:59, we work to raise this said amount of money. Although the goal is essential, the first and most important thing that we do when planning Charity Ball is choose a charity.

Picking a charity is most important because we consider the organization where we feel our money will have the most profound impact. At our last council meeting, our student body president addressed this very topic. She discussed that although the money is very important, it is not as important as the impact we will have on the community. Her words were somewhere along the lines of “ It is good to care about reaching our monetary goal, but the MOST important part of this event is how we make a difference to the charity we have chosen, and how us sponsoring them through Charity Ball is changing lives.”

The fact that I have visited Urban Ministries and have seen what they provide for the people in my community, makes working towards our goal for Charity Ball mean so much more. Knowing that the money we raise will go to improving multiple areas that are essential to one’s life, is truly inspiring. After last years check presentation for Learning Together at Charity Ball, I know that I will have the same feeling this year when a check for Urban Ministries is revealed. This feeling is one of pure joy for the impact that I know we have made.

$120,000, 480,000 quarters, or 12 million pennies. No matter how you look at it, it is a lot of money. The fact that a group of high schoolers can raise this much money is unbelievable. What is even better, is that a group of high schoolers can acknowledge that this event is not just about the money. We are able to know that all the hard work that we have event, is significantly improving the lives of people all over Wake County.
