I think our greatest gift to our community is that we’re a place where volunteers give back. The story is that we were founded by an interdenominational group of churches and synagogues when two homeless men froze to death on the streets of Raleigh. That’s the formal story.
The real story is that our founders had been volunteering their time to feed and clothe and shelter the homeless in classrooms and meeting halls, setting up cots every night. It wasn’t enough so they got together and founded Urban Ministries.
Our first program wasn’t services to the homeless. It was supporting volunteers.
We’re a space where volunteers gift us with their time, talent and treasure. They give back from their plenty to serve.
Every day we are humbled by the dedication of our caring volunteers. We couldn’t do it without them. Every day our volunteers thank us for being a place where they can feel good about doing good.
