Challenge

img_2152I like to challenge myself. I take multiple AP classes, I have a job, I try my hardest to provide for the people in my life, and more. I barely have any free time for myself, so why should I, someone who already has many things on her plate, donate my time to such a cause?

I may find my life to be challenging, but few lives are more challenging than the lives of the people at Urban Ministries. While I’m complaining about my school work, someone my age is working to support their family instead of getting an education. While I complain about not having the foods that I like in my pantry, families in Wake County barely have any food in theirs, or even a pantry at all. Instances like these occur daily in Wake County, and these families’ extreme challenges, such as choosing between getting health care or feeding their children, are too heartbreaking to ignore. Even though I like to challenge myself, I could never imagine facing these hard challenges that people in my own city face everyday. This is why I do what I do, because even though I face challenges in my life, it is also important for me to make sure that the people in my community do not have to face challenges as tough as these.

That being said, I not only challenge myself to be all in for Urban Ministries, I challenge you, my family, friends, classmates, and everyone else in our community. I challenge you to help Student Council raise $120,000 for Urban Ministries, and in turn you will be helping people in your community. These people are not just the homeless man you see with a sign on a street corner, or the woman you see with a bunch of bags sitting on the sidewalk outside the store. These are everyday people, people who have multiple jobs, people who served our country, and even the people you sit next to in class. Do not believe the notion that you have no power in this movement, or the notion that because you are not on student council that you can’t do anything. You can help, whether it be going door to door in your neighborhood, or asking your family for donations, or even something as simple as donating a few dollars to you 2A class or buying a ticket. You have the power to make a change in our community. Do not let the idea of a challenge scare you away – let it inspire you.
