What comes to your mind when you think of being homeless? Probably a begging man at the curb of an intersection. Maybe an elderly woman who sits outside of the grocery store during a frigid winter evening, bundled up in a sweater thinner than a pencil. Maybe the kid who sits across from you in your English class; the one who you’ve never heard speak, probably because he’s constantly worried about where he, his brother, sisters, and mother will sleep for the night. Probably not the latter, because what we often perceive as being “homeless” is something completely different than students struggling within our own school.

Despite our ignorance, there are myriad students at Enloe who face issues similar to the one described above. Though we, as a diverse student body, are often clueless as to the issues our peers face daily, we have taken the initiative to identify a few prevalent issues, and to make sustainable changes as a result.

Enloe Charity Ball is about using our power, as considerably inexperienced teens, to make a change that will touch the lives of people in ways that they wouldn’t have thought possible. It is more than a sum of money; it represents a culmination of hard work, initiative, and compassion that we, as a student body, exert, on our community.

I challenge you – whether you be a student council member, an Enloe student, parent or community member – to find ways to get involved this Charity Ball season. Whether it be volunteering at Urban Ministries with a club, or simply initiating a door-to-door fundraiser, your impact is worth it. Your purchase of a ticket is worth a mother getting to feed her child something more than an apple for dinner. Your donation is worth a homeless man getting a prescription to relieve his ailment. Your support is worth more than you or I could ever know, and every ounce of effort brings us a step closer to eradicating homelessness and hunger in Wake County.
