Charity Ball is a dance that Enloe High School hosts every year in the month of December to celebrate student-led efforts in raising money for local non-profit organizations through compassion and philanthropy. This year we have the pleasure of working with the Raleigh/Wake Partnership to End and Prevent Homelessness.
Most of us, like myself, are getting excited for the beautiful seasons and upcoming holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas as the months of November and December quickly approach; however, something even more incredible is happening right now: Charity Ball Season. It is the season of prosperity and productivity when our entire school works together to raise money and awareness for a charity – something bigger than ourselves.
If I take myself back to the day of my first Enloe Student Council interest meeting, I never knew what Student Council would be capable of doing. I never envisioned Student Council being able to produce something as special as Charity Ball. When I explained the concept of Charity Ball to my family for the first time, I remember being at loss of words to describe it. To this day, as my second year in Student Council working towards a tremendous yet very possible goal, I am so grateful to be a part of something as impactful and surreal as Charity Ball and everything we have made of it so far. The drive that goes behind all that we do as a community takes passion, motivation, selflessness, and an open mind.
A very important lesson that I have learned from my experience with Charity Ball is that we all have to open up our hearts to those that constantly have to worry about essentials like having a bed to sleep on or having food on the table. It isn’t until we put ourselves in other’s shoes when we realize their daily tragedies. No matter what age we are, it is never too late to go out of your way to help someone. Whether it is donating a few coins or volunteering at a homeless shelter, the opportunity to make a positive change towards people that lack a family, home, food, and love is truly a privilege.
This year, our mission is to raise $150,000, and as hard of a task as it may be, I know that we can make it happen if we just believe in doing something bigger than ourselves.
