I remember serving as an assistant principal at Enloe Magnet High School thirteen years ago when a student, Rachel Escobar, came up with the idea to hold a charity ball to support Haven House, and Principal Lloyd Gardner supported her efforts.  The students worked hard to get art donated for a silent auction that took place during the ball.  As a result, Haven House received approximately $10,000 from Enloe.  At the time, I thought this would be a one year event.  Fast forward seven years when I was fortunate to become the principal of Enloe, and I was elated to see that the event grew as much as it did.  At that point they had raised $22,000 to donate for people fighting breast cancer.  While serving as principal, student council wanted to come up with ideas to raise $50,000 for InterAct, over double what they made in 2011.  Students met with me frequently to share their ideas and see what was possible.  It was so inspiring to watch young people act so selflessly and come up with creative ideas to meet their goal.  One of the ideas we had that helped raise money was the homeroom wars, which has become a fun tradition.  Little did I know that the students would be successful in reaching their goal in 2012 and that the Enloe Charity Ball would grow into a major annual event where charities apply to be the recipient each year.  It has been a pleasure to watch this event grow from an event that raised $10,000 the first year to now over $140,000 annually.  I feel fortunate to have served as an English teacher, assistant principal and principal at a school that has such a giving spirit.
