Hurricane Relief Sensory Kits

To bring comfort to individuals with autism affected by Hurricane Florence, the Autism Society of North Carolina is asking our community to help assemble Sensory Kits. Enloe Student Council is incredibly fortunate to be a part of a community that strives to serve others. The Raleigh-Wake County community is so vibrant and diverse, allowing us to come together on the sole purpose of helping others in need.

A little more than a week after the devastation caused by Hurricane Florence to the Eastern part of NC, our community is jumping into action. With no hesitation, our community has started to collect supplies, donate money, and volunteer time towards the relief efforts. Even at Enloe, clubs have already made notable efforts in organizing supply drives and creating awareness on behalf of those affected by the hurricane.

The after effects felt by those living on the coast is something that is impossible to wrap our minds around thousands displaced, schools and homes destroyed, and floodwaters on the rise. Meeting last week with the Autism Society of North Carolina, the 2018 Enloe Charity Ball Beneficiary, we felt even further removed from the situation. Kristy White, ASNC’s Chief Development Officer, asked us to consider the individuals with autism who had been displaced by the storm. The new environments and high-stress situations caused by the storm can affect these individuals differently, often eliciting strong feelings of fear and anxiety.

Sensory Kits for individuals with autism can be assembled at home in portable packages such as backpacks and plastic bins and then mailed or dropped off to ASNC’s Raleigh office location, 5121 Kingdom Way, Suite 100, Raleigh, NC 27607, as well as Room 1201 at Enloe High School. ASNC is also accepting donations of a few items if you are unable to assemble entire kits. For a list of items that should be put into the sensory kits, click here.

In addition to providing Sensory Kits for individuals with autism, the Autism Society of NC is providing several hurricane resources:

Social Narratives & Tip Sheet

ASNC has social narratives for families to easily explain to their loved ones with autism the impact of the hurricane: I Can’t Go Home,” “Storm Safety at Home,” and “Evacuating for a Storm.”

They have also provided a tips sheet for shelter staff, volunteers, and others about supporting individuals with autism.

Other Resources

  • Find contact information for an Autism Resource Specialist near you on ASNC’s social-narratives-stormwebsite or call 800-442-2762 and they will connect you with one.
  • Families can also contact contact a Red Cross disability adviser at 512-975-1690 for help identifying a shelter near you that could provide support to those concerned about sheltering someone with autism.
  • Click here for more information on the Autism Society’s efforts and here for an extensive list of Hurricane Resources.

As we approach the 2018 Enloe Charity Ball season, we want the efforts of our community to not only touch the lives of the individuals of the Autism Society of North Carolina but also all those affected by the storm. These families are in our thoughts and prayers throughout the upcoming months of recovery from Hurricane Florence.
