Finding My Voice

My parents always told me I needed to speak more. Whether it was around a group of kids my age, or meeting new people, I was never one to engage in a conversation with people I didn’t know. That was, until I joined Student Council. Student Council changed who I am. In Student Council, all of our work revolves around teamwork and communication. This means interacting with different groups of people I would never interact with in the past. This year, we’re raising money for Haven House, a volunteer organization that helps kids who are facing homelessness. I’ve had countless interactions with several donors and conversations with students in my grade level, something my past self would never do. I’m proud to say that I’ve changed because of Student Council.

Albert Einstein once said, “Be a voice, not an echo”. I finally understand what that means. It’s important for us as students to stand up for what we believe in; to not be echoes. I’m no longer someone who stays silent. I’m no longer someone who watches from the sidelines. I’m someone who can speak confidently about what I believe in. And as Thanksgiving approaches, I’m glad to say that I’m thankful for Student Council because of how it’s changed my life.
