“Life is too short to walk fast”- Yaqub Brock

The past year and a half flipped my life upside down, I figured out how to learn virtually, found new ways to hang out with friends, and how to get through the hard times. This past summer, I had a close friend pass away unexpectedly. After he passed away I thought about his philosophy of taking life slowly. No matter where we went, Yaqub was always the last one there, whenever anyone asked him why he wouldn’t hurry or why he was late he would always respond with “Life’s too short to walk fast.” As I thought about these words, I realized how true they really are. Yaqub didn’t want to miss anything, he wanted to take it all in and appreciate each and every moment. I struggle with taking it slow and tend to move on from one thing and jump to the next.

At the beginning of this school year, I found myself rushing through the day, just trying to get from one thing to another, just trying to get through the days and the weeks. One day I started thinking about Yaqub’s catchphrase. I realized I wasn’t really appreciating the limited time I have in high school, coincidentally this was the day of our student council retreat. The representatives from Haven House came in and talked about Haven House and the tremendous impact it has on the people of Raleigh. All I could think about during their presentation was how excited I was to help raise money for Haven House. I realized that this was a way for me to walk slower, help others, and change the lives of those that Haven House helps. I am so thankful that I have the opportunity to help raise 150k for Haven House.
