Dots

Pointillism is a painting technique developed by French artist Georges Sureau, famous for his work titled A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. It consists of dots of color that, from a distance, create an image.

Enloe Charity Ball is the perfect piece of pointillist art. It is made up of thousands of individual moments, donations, acts of kindness, and displays of support, all of them coming together to form the big picture. These dots have been congregating for 16 years, left behind by advisors, alumni, and donors who have given up something of their own to support charitable causes. In the wake of a year of stagnation, it was difficult to find momentum, to pick up where we left off. Through the dedication of the student council, however, I found that people want to make their mark. When you give people an opportunity to make tangible change in their community, they will take it. I’ve seen members of my community grow. They create connections and are kind to one another, in the spirit of ECB. They share coffee. They celebrate each other’s art. They dye their hair hot pink for fundraisers. They dance. They come together and alive for a greater purpose.

There is no way that anyone could do this alone. No five individuals could claim to create such a unique and impactful experience without a crowd behind them. It is a joy to see the dots of color brought to the canvas by my peers.

This past week, the dots have begun to organize themselves, an image emerging. For me, that image is that of a celebration, one where we will present a grant of $150,000 to Haven House Services. As we stand halfway up the stairs at Marbles kids Museum on December 11, 2021, the true artistry of Enloe Charity Ball will be revealed to my classmates and members of my community. I hope they all look closely enough to see themselves in it.
