On top of the world

Coming from a middle school student council, where we drew teacher appreciation cards and planned spirit week, I was utterly unprepared for the Enloe Charity Ball experience. Last fall, I was thrilled to be elected “freshman advisor” and was excited for my first StuCo meeting — but I had no idea what I was getting involved with.

I joined a severely overlooked committee, Physical Publicity, and suddenly found myself spending hours each week hand-painting banners to advertise Charity Ball events to our student body. Beyond that, I was working tirelessly to send emails to family, friends, and local businesses asking them to support our cause, and volunteering with our beneficiary. I was realizing the amount of sheer hard work and commitment it takes to raise $180,000.

One afternoon last year, I got in the car with my mom and told her what I had done that day while volunteering. After listening to me talk, she said, “You really care about this, huh?” and I was suddenly hit with an overwhelming sense of pride for the work we do. Sure, Charity Ball takes a lot of effort, and is definitely a huge time commitment, but there is no better feeling than realizing it’s all coming together.

Last year, when the music turned down and the student body president announced that we had successfully raised $180,000 for Alliance Medical Ministry, I was on top of the world. There’s nothing I’d rather be doing than the work it takes to present a check again to this year’s beneficiary, Neighbor to Neighbor.
