Unexpected

After my 3 years on council I never imagined I would be a part of the “big 5”. For me, student council had been a place to make new friends and do things I never had the chance to do- like riding on the ECB float in the Raleigh Christmas Parade. I had never been the biggest money raiser, and felt content in staying on the sidelines when it came to my overall impact, thinking I didn’t have much more to offer.

As Smoove 17, our version of internal elections, approached and no one was willing to step up to this large responsibility, I decided to take a chance. I didn’t know how to create eye-catching banners, or how to organize a Twitter challenge, but I knew that I was passionate about Enloe Charity Ball, and I could make change from any position. That split second decision altered the course of my senior year and in the remaining days before Charity Ball, I am reflecting on everything that this amazing team and I have accomplished since we started. From this experience I’ve learned how to make press connections, digestible social media posts, and lead a committee of 17 people. But more importantly, I have learned to never back down from a challenge – you are capable of more than you believe.

None of us were 100% confident we had what it takes to raise $165,000 but three days away from the ball we can all look back and appreciate just how far we’ve come. I can’t wait to celebrate alongside everyone on Saturday and carry that momentum into the rest of my senior year.
