Meaningful Melodies

“Music, once admitted to the soul, becomes a sort of spirit, and never dies.”

Edward Bulwer-Lytton was exceptionally perceptive when he made this statement back in the nineteenth century. While having never been a musician himself, he knew the power that verse and melody could hold over someone. But more than anything, he found the “spirit” of music to be a vehicle for unity and positive change.

While I stood at the back of the room and watched the audience sway to the rhythm and rhymes rendered by performers at Open Mic Night, I felt the prized spirit Lytton unabashedly treasured. It was sort of amazing how a small group of audience members and performers sitting on the floor atop blankets in an enclosed dance room, lit with the colors of a sombre sunset, could make my heart burst with adoration and pride. That day, everyone in that room gathered to celebrate the Charity Ball cause and the talents of the Enloe student body. That day, the people in our school and community came together in support for something much bigger than them.

We hosted Open Mic Night in an effort to put the money from its ticket sales towards our $150K fundraising goal for this year’s charity, Haven House. But what I and everyone else felt that night was much more than that. In that room, an indescribable harmony played itself to the tune of solidarity. I can, however, say that I was no stranger to that overwhelming sensation.

Every week. Every day. Every moment. Whether I’m sitting in on our weekly executive council meetings or canvasing my neighborhood for funds, I feel the power and impact of being an Enloe Student Council member. I feel extremely lucky and proud to be part of such an amazing group of driven and passionate individuals to help make a difference in my community.

The spirit of this organization is synonymous with the idea of Lytton’s meaningful melody. And it, most definitely, is a force to be reckoned with.
